Visited these 2 neighboring sites in Westerville yesterday morning and found no migrants but a full panoply of residents despite the blustery conditions. Pond areas such as Shrock lake and Lake Otterbein were mostly devoid of waterbirds, but had good landbird diversity around their fringes. Notables included: cormorant - 1 bird was hanging around in Lake Otterbein, an unusual location for them Green Heron - 1 was at Shrock Lake in Sharon Woods Woodpeckers - large #s of Downies and Red-bellies, probably profiting from the extensive EAB damage at Sharon Woods Willow Flycatchers - 5-6 pair have settled into the meadows north of Shrock Lake Acadian Flycatchers - fairly scarce here, with only a few in the Spring Creek ravine at Sharon Woods E.Kingbirds - pairs were at both Shrock Lake and along Alum Creek Vireos - Warbling numerous at both Shrock Lake and along Alum Creek; Thomas Trail at Sharon Woods had 4-5 Red-eyed, 1 Yellow-throated Thrushes - only a few Wood Thrushes, mostly along the Thomas Trail at Sharon Woods Mimids - 3 Brown Thrashers were in the meadows north of Shrock Lake; Gray Catbirds were abundant at both sites Cedar Waxwings - pairs and small flocks along almost every woods edge at both sites Warblers - singing Parula & Yellow-thr. along Alum Creek; lots of Yellows & Common Yellowthroats in meadows N of Shrock Lake Buntings,Grosbeak - lots of Indigo Buntings at both sites. A singing Rose-br.Grosbeak along the Thomas Trail was unusual. Sparrows - 9-10 pairs of Field Sparrows singing in meadows north of Shrock Lake, a local stronghold for this species Orioles - 3-4 Baltimores and single Orchards singing both at Shrock Lake and along Alum Creek. ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
