I scouted areas along Blacklick Creek at the edge of 3-Creeks Park, from Cruiser Pond to Winchester Lake, then visited Pickerington Ponds, and finished at Portman park. Pick Ponds is picking up for waterfowl, and there were lots of fruit-eating landbirds in berrybushes along Blacklick Creek and at Portman Park. Notables included: Dabblers - Pick Ponds had decent numbers, with 120+ Green-wings, 30 Mallards, 10 Shovelers, and a few Black Ducks at Blue-wing Pond, and a few Shovelers, Green-wings, and Gadwalls at Ellis Pond. Diving Ducks - 6 Ring-necks were at Bluewing Pond, while Hooded Mergansers were there and at Cruiser Pond Pied-billed Grebes - singles at Cruiser Pond and Blue-wing Pond at Pick Ponds Shorebirds - Bluewing Pond had 2 pectoral Sandpipers and 8 Kildeer for a late flourish of shorebirds Raptors - Red-tails were at many stops, and 2 Kestrels were at different spots in Pick Ponds Brown Creeper - spotty distribution, with 1-2 at a few spots along the creek Kinglets - only Golden-crowns, but they were widespread E.Bluebirds - 2-4 at almost every stop, including several flyovers. They still seem to be on the move here. Robins - sizeable flocks of 50-80 birds at many different locations; the berry crop along Blacklick Creek looks quite good Cedar Waxwings - small #s anywhere that had honeysuckle bushes in berry Tree Sparrows - first small flocks, with 5 along the Meadowlark Trail and 6 at the Wood Duck picnic area (both Pick Ponds) Swamp Sparrows - good numbers, with 12 for the morning, topped by 5 at Cruiser Pond White-crowned - a single bird remained around the feeder at Wood Duck Picnic area in Pick Ponds White-throated - small flocks in many places Blackbirds - hardly any, with only a few flyover Redwings. Most likely have moved through by now. ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
