I spent much of the morning in parks along the Scioto River here, and the recent cold temps have started to drive birds into this long gorge along the River in Dublin. I stopped at O'Shaughnessy Dam, Twin Lakes, Amberleigh Park, Donegal Cliffs, and Kiwanis (joined by Brian Ellyson at these last 2 spots), and found many more birds down along the river than away from it. The dam, Amberleigh, and Kiwanis, especially, had concentrations of birds. Included were; waterfowl - not much beyond Mallards and geese, but a few Hooded Mergansers were at several areas Herons - Great Blues were at many spots along the river; the roost below the dam had at least 10 birds early in the morning. Bald Eagles - an immature flew past at Kiwanis, and an adult was a bit further up river Hawks - Kiwanis had 1 Red-shouldered and 2 Red-tails, while Donegal Cliffs had 1 Cooper's BrownCreepers - scarce; could only find one (at Donegal Cliffs) Wrens - LOTS of Carolinas, along with 2 Winter Wrens: 1 at Amberleigh, another at Kiwanis E.Bluebirds - small numbers at several different stops, never more than 3. AmericanRobins - flocks at several places, working over the last of the honeysuckle berries, as well as foraging for bugs and fallen fruits in the leaf litter. Cedar Waxwings - small flocks in many places; biggest was 40+ next to the Emerald Pkwy bridge Warblers - only Yellow-rumps, but had 1-2 at many different spots. Sparrows - nothing out of the ordinary, but lots of flocks of White-throats along the river Blackbirds - not a single bird was seen in this area ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
