Hi Everyone, I'm glad I created some excitement on a cold day. To get to where I found the bird, turn off Croft Road toward the Corps of Engineers office. Almost immediately you will see a road off to the left that goes to the Crabill House. It was just down that road a little ways in the trees and shrubs on the left or west. With the sun shining from the east it was feeding in the sunniest areas. There is parking a little farther along the main road. It did make any sound at all that we heard. Please, in addition to taking (these great!) photos please record any call notes the bird gives. This may help us with the identification, as many empids can be separated out on call note alone. good birding! We looked and were very surprised to see an Empidonax flycatcher. I told Julie to watch it while I ran back to the car to get my camera. I got back and we found the bird again and followed it for several minutes and I took pictures of the bird. We called Brian Menker and Larry Jeanblanc and they both arrived in a little while. We had lost the bird but a few minutes later we spotted it again but only for half a minute. We drove home and I looked at my pictures. It pumped its tail up but otherwise acted like a flycatcher. Julie saw it find a caterpillar so it was finding food. I have posted several pictures on eBird. I would appreciate any ideas on what species it is. My best guess is Yellow-bellied, Cordilleran, or Pacific Slope since it was very green on the back.
