After not finding many gulls in Cleveland, we headed west to bird by the power plant at Avon Lake. There was one male Wood Duck present! There were hundreds of Common Mergansers. Other ducks present were Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, Redhead, Lesser Scaup, Canvasback and Red-breasted Mergansers. Two Mute Swans were there. There was quite a bit of open water - much more than anywhere else along the lake. There were probably 50 Black-backed Gulls. Also present was one adult Lesser Black-backed Gull and one first cycle Glaucous Gull. Before our arrival a first cycle Iceland Gull had been seen. The gulls were on the ice out fairly far. A scope is necessary. Doreene Linzell Dan Sanders ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
