During my recent "Getting Started with eBird" program in Geauga County, the
question arose of using "X" on checklists. The good folks at eBird explain
the problem with "X" in this piece from their HELP section
(http://help.ebird.org/customer/portal/articles/1006732). It only takes a
few minutes to read the entire explanation and maybe, if you currently use
"X", you will be convinced to start estimating numbers.

If you still are unsure about estimating numbers when encountering flocks of
birds, read the section on "Bird Counting 101"
(https://ebird.org/news/counting-101/) and for really challenging counts
see "Bird Counting 102" (https://ebird.org/news/counting-201/).

If you are new to eBird and would like a copy of the handout from our eBird
program just send me an email and I will send you a copy (WORD document).
