Yesterday, April 13, there were two common loons, 2 horned grebes working the shoreline riprap and a lone lesser scaup at Geauga Park District’s Walter C. Best Wildlife Preserve south of the Chardon town line. Today, only one loon remained, but there were 3 horned grebes (1 still in winter plumage), 4 ring-necked ducks, a pair or two of mallards and a few Canada geese. A Forster’s tern briefly checked out the lake. A broad-winged hawk soared overhead and among the many tree swallows, I got my FOY barn swallow. Three killdeers formed a trio, 2-3 rusty blackbirds along the stream by the lake outflow and, calling from the interior wetland, a Virginia rail. Pretty good for a short walk with the dog.
