I watched a Short-eared owl hunting just before sun set last night Thursday April 19th in rural Carey (Wyandot County) on CH 4 between 96 and 97 south of town. I always see Kestrels working this patch, and often Harriers, but the first SEOW. It let me sit in my car for a long time and flew around me like nothing. I'm not sure of the nesting timeline for them, but could it be a nester here or is this a migrant? There is also a little pine grove near this that I have always thought should have winter owls. I will be keeping a closer eye on this area from now on.
