Beautiful downtown Perry county was host yesterday and today to its 237th bird species in the form of a pair of swallow tailed kites (just north of somerset along Rt 13, and today along stone quarry road).  It was first spotted by Susannah Hopkins who was kind enough to share quickly with other Perry county birders.  There are only about 7-8 of us.  Following the advice of Doreen Linzelle (go now!!!), we quickly found the birds soaring above a soybean field.
Rare birds brings birders, and soon there were five cars parked along Rt 13, including most of the hot shots from licking county to the north. Today there were more, along stone quarry road.  I got to meet birders I’ve known for years, and some new ones as well.  Such is the nature of birding.
This was county bird number 230 for me, and number 231 for Vicki Derr.  Some time I’ll have to look up the seven I’m missing.
If you venture out to Perry county in search of these beautiful birds, try Rt 13 first (Vicki saw them there again this morning) then stone quarry road, and then perhaps black horse road.  It’s nice to get a new county bird, but I want then to fly a bit further south and become a new yard bird!!  Spend some of your birding money in somerset.  Several nice restaurants.
