Recently Virginia Berridge mentioned that Keele UP had republished Brian Harrison's DRINK & THE VICTORIANS (originally published in 1971) and Margaret Barrow quoted a review by Dorothy Thompson arguing that this was genuinely a revised second edition, not just a reprint with updated bibliography. May I ask whether those who have seen reviews or the book itself might tell those of us outside Britain how the Keele UP version differs from the original edition? Also does anybody know whether there will be a North American imprint? In the USA British book prices are very high. By the way, some years ago at a small conference at the University of Florida I asked specialists on drink/temperance history how Harrison had influenced them. Surprisingly, the answer was virtually not at all. Many had begun their research before 1971 (as did I); others admitted that they had never read the book! * David Fahey (Miami Univ) [log in to unmask]
