I am currently researching the everyday life of men, women and youths working in the Australian hotel and liquor industry from 1890 to 1920. I am particularly interested in obtaining references for recent American literature that has attempted an integration of cultural and social history, especially cultural history and labour history. I am looking at the construction of particular working class figures such as 'the barman', 'the barmaid', 'the waiter', 'the waitress', 'the prostitute', 'the laundress', 'the housemaid'. References to any attempts to rework notions of working class which reject the distinction between 'respectable' and 'unrespectable' would be greatly appreciated.
