Bairds text was published in Swedish in 1838 as 'Historisk Teckning af=20 Nykterhets-F=F6reningarna i Nord-Amerikas Forenta Stater jemte n=E5gra=20 upplysningar ang=E5ende dessa F=F6reningar i England, Sverige och andra=20 Lander'; and in Danish in 1841 (translated from german by a baptist=20 M=A2nster): 'Afholdenheds-Selskabernes Historie i de forenede Stater i=20 Nordamerika'. The Danish text was immediately destroyed by the Danish=20 authorities as a 'sceterian' document. Just a few copies survived. Bairds= =20 activities was discribed 1841 by J.H. B=F6ttcher (in german): 'Geschichte= =20 der Massigheits-Gesellschaften in den norddeutschen Bundes-Staaten . . =20 bis um jahre 1840 (1841). An owerview of his activities in North-Germany=20 is published in Chr. Stubbe: Die altere Massigkeits- u.=20 Enthaltsamkeitsbew. In Schleswig-Holstein, Berlin 1906, Jfr. Schr. II 5,=20 1910.=20 The spread of Bairds ideas seems to be of great importance for the=20 understandment of where it was possible for the first temperance movement= =20 to establish a 'bridge-head' for further influence. My own comparative article on Sweden and Denmark: 'Drunken Danes=20 and Sober Swedes' concerns - as Robin Room mentioned - a litle about Bairds= =20 different impact in the two countries and try to explain why his ideas=20 got response in Sweden and not in Denmark. . . . The text is difficult=20 to get, but I can mail a copy if some one are interested. =20 E-mail: [log in to unmask] Fax (department of History) +45 35 32 82 41 Sidsel Eriksen, Research Fellow, Ph.D. Department of History, Njalsgade 102, 2300 Copenhagen S Denmark.
