On the front page of the business section of the New York Times, 27
Aug. 1997, there is an interesting article on South African
Breweries. It controls 98% of market share in that country. 93% of
its customers are black. The argue points out that "on a continent
where most people survive on subsistence agriculture, commerical
brewing the one industrial process that is found in every
country--and survives every calamity," such as Primus in Kisangani,
Mutzig in Kilgali, and Club in Monrovia. South African Breweries is
expanding in the developing world by buying rundown state-owned
breweries. Finally, I should mention that South Africa ranks 14th in
per capita beer consumption (14.7 gallons). (The Czech Republic
ranks first at 42.4 gallons per capita, while the USA ranks 11th.)
