On the front page of the business section of the New York Times, 27 Aug. 1997, there is an interesting article on South African Breweries. It controls 98% of market share in that country. 93% of its customers are black. The argue points out that "on a continent where most people survive on subsistence agriculture, commerical brewing the one industrial process that is found in every country--and survives every calamity," such as Primus in Kisangani, Mutzig in Kilgali, and Club in Monrovia. South African Breweries is expanding in the developing world by buying rundown state-owned breweries. Finally, I should mention that South Africa ranks 14th in per capita beer consumption (14.7 gallons). (The Czech Republic ranks first at 42.4 gallons per capita, while the USA ranks 11th.) David M.
