Gandhi was a consistent prohibitionist and was opposed to tobacco,
ganja, and opium as well as alcohol. There's a multi-volume series of his
papers published in Dehli about 1950, I think. The volumes from the early
1920s are particularly rich in prohibitionist statements, often delivered
with acerbic wit.

Is there any scholarly literature specifically on the Taiping rebels in 19th
cent. China outlawing the consumption of alcoholic drink and Gandhi's
call for
prohibition in 20th cent. India?
