For a conference on November 12, 1999, the Hagley Museum and Library invites proposals for papers on the production, distribution, and use of food and drink within market economies since 1850. We are especially interested in essays which consider how food or drink studies can influence our understanding of modern consumer societies, much as material culture studies already have done. Sidney Mintz (Johns Hopkins University) will deliver the conference's keynote address. Paper proposals are due by April 1, 1999 and should include an abstract of no more than 500 words and a brief c.v. Funds may be available to support travel to the conference by speakers. Please direct proposals and queries to: Dr. Roger Horowitz, Associate Director Center for the History of Business, Technology, and Society Hagley Museum and Library PO Box 3630 Wilmington, DE 19807 direct fax: 302-655-3188 <[log in to unmask]>
