Andrew Barr raises an interesting question about
his first book, Drink, published by Bantam in 1995. I excluded if from my
list because I was focusing solely on scholarly books, published by academic
presses and written by academic historians. Is his book suitable for
college courses? As British history book review editor for the Social
History of Alcohol Review, I can say that no review copy was received from
Bantam. To provide guidance for teaches of college courses, I shall
arrange for the next issue of SHAR to carry a scholarly review. Because
Andrew Barr suggests we should regard his book as the standard source, I think
it best to ask a team of alcohol specialists to critique it. I shall
announce the participants as soon as possible.
