I know many of you are far from Philadelphia, but I want to let you know about a couple of upcoming temperance events in that city. The Library Company of Philadelphia and the American Historical Theatre will present an evening of Musical & Intellectual Temperance Entertainment on Wednesday, September 15, 1999, at 6 in the evening. There will be an abbreviated version of Ten Nights in a Bar-Room, with songs, drama, harangues, and heckling, in authentic 19th century style. Please consider yourself invited, and join us for a small reception beforehand. Also, the Library Company will offer a free illustrated lecture by Peter Mancall, "Deadly Medicine: Indians and Alcohol in Early America," on Thursday, September 30, 1999 at 6 p.m. Both of these events are offered in conjunction with the Library's current exhibition, Ardent Spirits: The Origins of the American Temperance Movement, which will be on view until late November. You can visit the virtual exhibition at the Library Company's website, address below. -- Jessy Randall Jessy Randall Library Company of Philadelphia 1314 Locust Street Philadelphia, PA 19107 215-546-3181 [log in to unmask] http://www.librarycompany.org
