Within his own church he was noted for his uncompromising response to anyone who disagreed with him. His bitter invective left a church that was sorely divided at the end of his pastorship. Cheever's anti-Catholicism was among the more vitriolic of the antebellum era. Robert York's biography of Cheever is old, but it is still a good judicious appraisal.
