I just spent a year researching the history of grammar and some of the
linguistics infighting that is going on in this century. If you want
some stuff on Grammar as the Handmaiden of Thought, why not go back and
look at the work the medievals did, especially the Scholastics, and come
up with some modern applications using generative theory? Of course,
Padley is very good as an intro. When I was working away, I kept
thinking how wonderful it would be to write a second half of my text that
tracked the philosophical uses of grammar terms and how those terms have
permeated our language and thinking today. However, the sabbatical was
only a year long! Anyone know a good text that actually explores this
relationship?
