A few remarks on idioms:
1. Not all idioms are fixed. In Idioms and Idiomaticity, Chitra Fernando
places idiomatic forms on a continuum, demonstrating the extent to which
variation is admitted.
2. Idioms you might think of as fixed can be used creatively. For
example, John Lahr, in The New Yorker, accuses someone of "making a Mound
of Venus out of a molehill."
