Ed,
After thinking about it some more and reading Herb Stahlke, et al, I realize
that I agree this is NOT a subjunctive mood, but merely a conditional.
Therefore, I would like to change my response to number 1 from "Yes" to
"No." I also strongly agree that this "lesson" is not for second graders - I
think that Bill Spruiell's idea about "code-switching" (although I wouldn't
use that term with second graders) is probably the best way to deal with
this sort of thing at that level.
