There is another popular text called "Language: The Social Mirror". I
don't remember the author; I'm in the office and the book is at home,
of course. It has a nice overview of various social significances of
language.
In the linguistics community, "Applied Linguistics" is,
unfortunately, virtually synonymous with "ESL". A lot of textbooks
are not so narrow, thankfully.
Stylistics has not been much in fashion for a very long time. There
is a little more going on these days. Cognitive stylistics is very
active. "The Stylistics Reader" does cover nice ground over the
history of the field.
An excellent book applying linguistics to literature, drama, etc. is
"Exploring the Language of Poems, Plays, and Prose" by Mick Short.
It's an excellent book, touching on everything from meter to point of
view. It is also intended for people with no ling. background. It's
only flaw is that it portrays English vowels as being a short-long
system, which isn't accurate. But it does match what phonics programs
teach (phonics terms would have worked very well for Middle English).
