Early this week, at Green Lawn Cem in Columbus, I heard a strange call.
As I tried to track it down, the bird (what else?) moved to a rather
distant spot. But, I never actually saw it fly (which is not unusual in
my experience). As I tried to follow it, it would move to a rather
distant area from where I last heard it. Was it being skittish or just
moving about??
The call was somewhat of the quality of a Red-breasted Woodpecker -- but
nothing like the call.
It started with 2 distinct notes on different pitches followed by several
(4-6) notes on the same pitch. All clear and distinct, not run together
like a chatter or rattle. I have not been able to find it Stokes Guide
among what I imagined would be possible suspects.
I thought of possibly some kind of tree frog, but I only ever heard one
call at a time. And after I approached the apparent area, it stopped and
then came from a different area, usually somewhat distant.
Any ideas?
