I spent 2 free hours this morning birding the south end of Alum Lake looking for migrants. I only had time to hit the New Galena boat launch and the beach area, and neither was awash in migrants. Highlights included
Blue-winged Teal - a flock of 30 was evading me at New Galena and another flock of 10 flew by the beach. They were being skittish for good reason: early hunting season was on.
Larids - 300+ Ring billed gulls on the beach had nothing else of note other than a few Herring Gulls.
Flycatchers - nothing beyond a single Phoebe
Vireos - 3 White-eyed were still singing in the scrublands around the New Galena boat launch
Red-br.Nuthatch - a single bird was calling from a small copse of trees at the west end of the dam.
Thrushes - 1 Wood and 4-5 Swainson's were lurking around the few stands of trees at New Galena
Mimids - 36+ Gray Catbirds at New Galena was down a bit from a little over a week ago. A Brown Thrasher was still there as well.
Warblers - few and far between, with single Bay-breasted and Blackpoll being the most interesting.
