Hello All,
With all the warm south winds most people have left the marsh region to the
birds. This may be a reason to keep on the look out. The Black Swamp Bird
Observatory Songbird Migration Monitoring station caught its first ever Northern
Shrike in the mist nets at the Navarre Marsh unit of Ottawa NWR. The bird
was captured Monday morning and released after banding, measurements, and
pictures were taken. The full story, including a photo, can be viewed on the BSBO
website _www.bsbobird.org_ (http://www.bsbobird.org/) by clicking on the
Bander’s Blog button.
The station captured a Loggerhead this past May and yesterday the Northern
Shrike. The banding station is on private First Energy property but if the
birds are around they can be seen anywhere in the marsh region around Magee
Marsh Wildlife Area/ Ottawa NWR/ Crane Creek State Park. The winds had been out
of the South for over a week but there are still interesting birds around.
Just goes to prove that the more you are out---the more you will see! This cold
front hopefully will bring in other new birds.
Enjoy the Season,
Julie Shieldcastle
