This morning while taking the dog out, there were a group of crows mobbing
something in the woods west of my house. I walked over and saw that the
crows were going after a LONG-EARED OWL that was pressed tightly against a
tree. My presence scared the crows away. I watched the owl briefly before
heading to the house to get my camera. When I returned the owl was gone. I
was unable to relocate it and the crows apparently did not relocate it
either because they left the area also.
From my yard in North Perry, Lake County there was a decent movement of
birds despite the light northwest winds. I had thousands of blackbirds
including a couple hundred rusty blackbirds. Also passing by were a few
hundred ring-billed gulls, a few killdeer, a couple hundred robins, a few
bluebirds, and a few meadowlarks. The north winds were evidently enough
that no vultures or hawks passed by. The lake is still 100% frozen so no
waterfowl.
