Here in the college town of Athens in SE Ohio, the local student population
leaves a lot of 'bird food' on the main streets of town for our local
European Starlings and House Sparrows. (Poor birds - they always seem a
bit peaked during summer and winter breaks.) Today we got to watch
meta-feeding - an adult female sharpie swooped right in front of our car to
nab a starling feeding on spilled roadside food. The sharpie carried the
twitching bird to the top of a garbage can on a nearby sidewalk, where she
perched until scared off by a passing (and oblivious) student.
Definitely the highlight of my day - beats grading homework any time!
