My daughter and I saw an osprey yesterday evening (July 11) while
canoeing/fishing at Shreve Lake in southern Wayne County. It flushed from
the top of a tree in the southeast corner of the lake and had what
appeared to be a very full crop. "That was a pretty fat bird," my daughter
said.
There were several green herons at the lake, one of which we anchored very
close to because we didn't see it at first, but it didn't pay any
attention to us one way or the other and gave us a nice long look at its
feeding behavior -- snatching an insect (apparently) from a branch,
craning its neck waaay up to peer down into the water, etc.
