Doug and all,

The listserv guidelines are found here:
http://www.ohiobirds.org/site/emaillist.php#guidelines

Feeding birds (wild birds) issues are appropriate.

If anyone wishes to respond to my request to not feed Snowy Owls, please
reply to me privately.

I'm kind of new to the list serve, could someone please post what this site
is supposed to be used for. I thought it was for sighting of birds by
county, etc. Not a discussion of to feed or not to feed, or list or not to
list. Maybe I missed something.

if the lemming population is cyclical, perhaps this is nature's way of
keeping the owl population in check so that the lemming population can
recover and the population of snowy owls can be healthier. Sometimes man's
best intentions have the opposite effect. How do we know if one individual
is healthy or starving or not the best specimen and is not supposed to
survive? I usually will side on intervening if the problem is obviously
caused by humans. If it was a Lemming Leap Year-that is a natural cycle.

so I defer to the experts. I know raptors can habituate quickly-ask the
hawks that very quickly learned what time of day I let my bantam chickens
out of their pen.... and they are not like seed eaters, sap eaters or even
insect eaters that can go here and there and find seeds here and berries
there whether from the woods or our feeder. They have to hunt. And
depending on on how/where they are being fed-it may or may not be
detrimental to their overall well being.

it doesn't necessarily translate into "more good than harm." On that note,
if I found any starving animal, I would surely try to feed it, even a
starling (gasp!).
