I decided to cover the lakeshore today from North Perry to Cleveland.
Things are picking up. Although waterfowl variety remains low, numbers are
increasing. Large numbers of common and red-breasted mergansers were seen
everywhere. Other than those two species, the only other species I saw were
mallard and black duck and common goldeneye.
Gulls were interesting. There were large numbers of ring-billed gulls
everywhere. It seemed that there were more great black-backed and herring
gulls as you headed east. Fairport Harbor had the highest number of
black-backs with close to 50. There were small number of Bonaparte's at
Fairport, Eastlake, and Cleveland. The only gulls of note were an adult
THAYER'S GULL at Eastlake and a lesser black-backed gull at Wendy Park. I
did get a distant view of the immature POMARINE JAEGER at Wendy Park.
Other birds of note were a NORTHERN SHRIKE at Lake Erie Bluffs, a MERLIN in
Euclid (another was photographed at the Lake Erie Bluffs also today),
RED-NECKED GREBE east of East 72nd Street in the basin (found by Jim
McCarty), and I was able to see the Wendy Park HOARY REDPOLL. All in all a
pretty good day.
