This past Friday night, my wife Denise and I, had the pleasure of being invited to the Public Reception of John Guy Petruzzi's exhibit "SANCTUARY", at The McDonough Museum of Art, on the campus of Youngstown State University. John, a Mahoning County birder, artist and educator, thru his artwork explores issues of climate change, declining biodiversity, and habitat loss, through a series of intense watercolors. Each of the unbelievably detailed colorful paintings are of numerous birds of each species in flight. Carolina Parakeet, Piping Plover, Swallow-tailed Kite, Golden-winged Warbler, Bachman's Warbler, Loggerhead Shrike, Common Tern, Passenger Pigeon, Barn Owl, Black Tern, Northern Harrier, and Snowy Egret, are the birds depicted. Also as part of the showing in a separate exhibit are over one hundred of John's bird photographs wonderfully displayed. John's local source is the Mill Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, a 264 acre former fish farm that now offers a unique diversity of wetland habitats. The "SANCTUARY" exhibit runs from September 7th thru October 26th. The McDonough Museum is open Tuesday thru Saturday 11AM to 4PM and located at 525 Wick Avenue just north of downtown Youngstown. The website for the museum is (mcdonoughmuseum.ysu.edu.) and to view some of John's art work, his website is (johnguypetruzzi.com). To any birder who visits this exhibit, I guarantee you will be happy you made the trek to this side of Ohio.
