The problem is that MAIL is having problems with your MAIL.MAI file. This
file is supposed to be an Indexed file. It sounds like this has gotten
messed up in some way. Issue the following command:
$ DIR/FULL MAIL.MAI
I'm guessing you'll find that the File Organization will be something other
than Indexed. Or, possibly, you've got 2 versions of the MAIL.MAI file.
If you've got a bad MAIL.MAI file, delete it. If you've got 2 versions of
the MAIL.MAI file, delete version 2.
This should get you to the point where you can use mail again, but it will
lose any mail you've received previously received.
To reset the "new messages" message, issue the command SET NEW 0 inside MAIL.
