The modem pool for dial-in access to Miami computing resources has
been upgraded and expanded with new high speed modems.
The current configuration is as follows:

Service: 9600 bps V.32
Phone Number: 529-2161
Qty: 10
Compression: MNP level 5
Error Correction: MNP5 level 5
Service: 2400 bps
Phone Number: 529-6114
Qty: 8
Compression: None
Error Correction: MNP level 3
Service: 1200 bps, Bell 212
(NOTE: This service will be discontinued 3/18/94.
Please use 2400 bps service after that time.)
Phone Number: 529-5777
Qty: 2
Please note the following comments concerning this upgrade of service.
1) Use the 14,400 bps service (529-4999) for newer modems of all speeds
to take advantage of V.42bis compression.
Note: Some users may require modem re-configuration to use higher
speed services. If you experience problems with 14,400 bps service,
use the 9600 bps service (529-2161).
2) Use the 9600 bps service (529-2161), if you receive a busy signal
when trying to attach to the 14,400 bps service.
3) The 2400 bps modems (529-6114) can be used for connection by all
speeds of modems (at 2400 bps). However, no compression is available.
4) The 1200 bps modems are primarily for use by old Racal-Vadic modems
and are not recommended for connection by any other modems.
Note that these modems will not be available after 3/19/94. If you
are using a modem that will not connect with the other services
outlined above, please contact the Help Desk at 529-7900 for
assistance.
5) The Kermit scripts for access to the IBM Mainframe, the MIAVX1 Vax and
Sherlock do not require modification to work with the new high-speed
modems.
6) Please see the related technical announcement, "Dial-In Service Technical
Notes", for recommendations on specific software and hardware
configurations.
