I just went back and looked at the performance logs starting at around
9:00pm and I didn't find anything out of the ordinary. It looks like the
system had between 15-20% idle time from 9pm until midnight.
In addition, there's an extremely low priority job running (a disk
defragmenter) that only gets CPU time if no other process is using the CPU.
It was getting quite a bit of time last night, thereby indicating that the
CPU was not busy.
Another cause of possible performance problems is excessive disk usage.
I can't find any evidence of this either last night, though.
I couple of things that would help us diagnose the problem in the future:
1) The exact time that you saw the problem.
2) How long the problem continued (was it only for 5 minutes or did the
problem last for hours).
3) Do you see performance problems on any of the other systems or
when using Netscape? This will help us determine if it's a network
problem or a system problem.
4) How were you connected to the system? PPP, Kermit, network connection
from your residence hall, computer lab, etc.
