Miami Computing & Information Services (MCIS) announces conversion to the University's new central Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) server. As announced previously, effective today (Thursday, 29 June), NetNews is being made available to the Miami University community from one centralized NNTP server (NNTP.MUOhio.Edu). In two weeks the separate NetNews servers which previously supplied NetNews to the centrally managed, multi-user systems (MiamiU, the IBM VM/CMS system, and MiaVX1, the Digital OpenVMS system in Oxford) will be turned off. NetNews will be provided solely from one central server, greatly expediting management while also improving performance and making more efficient use of Miami's computing resources. Please note: One minor inconvenience of the conversion from multiple NetNews servers to one central NetNews server is the change in article numbering which will occur when individual users begin using the new newsreaders on MiamiU and MiaVX1 or when their NNTP clients on the desktop or other Miami University computing systems begin receiving NetNews from the new server. The effect of this change is that previously read articles will appear as unread. Please refer any comments, problems and suggestions to the MCIS Help Desk by electronic mail at [log in to unmask] or by telephone at 529-7900. Thank you. -- John B Harlan Campus Wide Information Systems (CWIS) Coordinator Miami University (Ohio USA) http://WWW.MUOhio.Edu/~HarlanJB/ (513) 529-5330 (513) 529-1496 fax [log in to unmask]
