Electronic mail at Miami suffered several glitches this weekend, from which it is still recovering. The mailer software on MiamiU, the centrally managed, multi-user IBM VM/CMS system, did not come online this morning as it normally does, and thus stopped delivering mail. The Charon gateway, which delivers mail to those Novell NetWare servers not running Mercury (i.e., pre-4.0 or later Novell NetWare servers), was locked up at the hardware level most of the weekend. The microcomputer in MCIS Operations that normally pages MCIS Networking and Technical Support staff when something is wrong, also apparently suffered some malfunction over the weekend, which prevented it from alerting the appropriate staff. The mail backlogs on MiamiU, the Charon gateway, and Rose (which resolves [log in to unmask] addresses, and thus inherits backlogs when downed systems come back online) are being processed this morning, and electronic mail appears to be moving again fairly normally.
