Miami Computing & Information Services (MCIS) will attempt to replace the University's primary name server, MUSrv.MUOhio.Edu, on Monday, 18 March 1996 between 7- 8am. The result of this change should be much more reliable Domain Name Service (DNS) and Bootstrap Protocol (BootP) service for the University. [One function of DNS is to resolve alphabetic network domain names to Internet Protocol (IP) numbers used for inter-device communication. BootP's function is to assign IP numbers to network connected devices.] During the switchover any systems which rely on MUSrv.MUOhio.Edu for DNS and BootP service will most likely be unable to connect to other systems and resources across the University and on the Internet. If for any reason the switchover is not fully implemented Monday morning, the present MUSrv system will be returned to service, and another attempt to switchover will be made Tuesday morning, 19 March 1996, from 7-8am. MCIS Technical Support staff will keep the MCIS Help Desk apprised of progress. Any questions or concerns should be addressed to the MCIS Help Desk by telephone at 529-7900 or by electronic mail at [log in to unmask] -- John B Harlan Campus Wide Information Systems (CWIS) Coordinator Miami University 137 Hoyt Hall Oxford, Ohio 45056-1618 USA http://WWW.MUOhio.Edu/~CoorCWIS/ (513) 529-5330 voice (513) 529-1496 fax [log in to unmask]
