The interactive portion (SEA) of the MiaVX1 cluster crashed at around 10:00pm on Monday, March 17, 1997. All logins to MiaVX1 (through telnet, ftp, or dialup) were affected. In addition, WWW access to miavx1.muohio.edu was affected. The cause is the same as several crashes that occurred in February that we thought we had solved (obviously not, though). This crash seems to have revealed more information about the actual cause and we're hoping this information will help Digital in determining the real solution to the problem. The system returned to service at approximately 10:15pm. As part of the booting of the system, though, Perl did not get started properly. This would cause Perl programs to fail with an error similar to: %DCL-W-ACTIMAGE, error activating image SOCKETSHR -CLI-E-IMAGEFNF, image file not found $1$DKB0:[SYS0.SYSCOMMON.][SYSLIB]SOCKETS HR.EXE; This problem was fixed at approximately 9:00am on Tuesday, March 18, 1997. MCIS appreciates your understanding and cooperation in relation to these outages. -- Kent Covert, Software Coordinator Miami Computing and Information Services Miami University, Oxford, OH [log in to unmask]
