Bill,
     Thanks very much for your note on Gleason.   I knew him in the sixties, 
used one of his texts when in graduate school, and used another when I myself 
taught linguistics.   And what a fantastic workbook went along with the texts. 
  You are SO RIGHT about his writing skills.
