If we must rehash these arguments about whether one should teach grammar,
it would be helpful if writers would specify what they mean by teaching
grammar, to whom they are teaching it, for what purpose they are teaching
it, what results they expect from teaching it, and what is being offered as
evidence that this or that approach has this or that effect. Otherwise, we
will never advance.
