The book must indeed have been very expensive to produce---lots and lots of 
plates, for one thing.   And keep in mind that it was published by University 
of California Press.   I found it in my local college library---and I've always 
been very glad I did.

Incidentally, one of the more intriguing statements Parkes makes is this:   
"Punctuation is and always has been a personal matter."   Coming from a man who 
knows as much as he does about the history of punctuation, that should give 
us pause, and perhaps have some effect.
