Andrew,

I have an M.Div from a Baptist Seminary. They used to call me Dr. Diagram. I always appreciated the graphic display of syntax that the digram gave me. I do not teach my student to diagram, but I use it to teach them syntactical relationships

I have been teaching grammar and syntax here at Flint Central High School. I teach the honors English course for the seniors. Most have had little or no grammar or linguistic exposure that they can remember since elementary school. Most of my students average a two point gain if they retake the ACT after one semester with me. That increased score average among my students is consistent below 30. After 30, they do well without the grammar and syntax.

Grace and Peace,

those who fail to learn the lessons
that history teaches, are just doomed.

Dear ATEG members: I’m researching who most typically teaches the grammar course (or preferably two or more classes involving study of language, grammar, and/or methods of incorporating language instruction into one’s curriculum) in programs that prepare secondary education students in English Language Arts. Are people with PhDs in linguistics more commonly recruited? Or those with some combination of linguistics, education, comp/rhet, etc.? I’d love to hear about the backgrounds of people who typically teach such courses at your instititutions. Thanks so much, Andrew Andrew SmythAssistant Professor of EnglishSouthern Connecticut State University501 Crescent StreetNew Haven, CT 06515(203) [log in to unmask]
