In English Grammatical Categories and the Tradition to 1800, Ian Michael 
proves that there were 56 different classifications during that period.   The 
tradition hardened considerably after Lindley Murray, until modern linguistics 
opened it up.   I believe that Fries had something like two dozen categories.
