Thanks for a clear explanation of the issue.  I think part of the problem
all teachers have with grammar is that, by its nature, practically any
grammatical classification system gives the deceptive illusion that grammar
is always an 'either/or' decision, where in truth a given word might fall
on a scale between at least two choices.
