Dear John,
Glad to be of help.
My book, Meaning First, shows how I taught required classes titled "Rhetoric
and Composition." Grammar (and such things as organization and tone, etc.)
are all related to effective composition. I did not aim to teach grammar as a
separate subject, only as an aid to good writing.
I don't believe that my CCCC presentation would be of great use to you over
there because it relates contents of our popular textbooks to the requirements
of our specified tests -- which were changed in Texas since then. Better is a
book I cited a great deal: Publishing in Rhetoric and Compositioon, edited
by Gary Olson and Todd Taylor, published by State University of New York Press
in 1997. I do recommend that highly.
I read your request and a response on the Sysfling list.
All the best,
Carolyn
