Hi, Brenda.  I think of the reflexive in objective position as a
hypercorrection (the two "rules" here would be that the reflexive should
be identical with the doer of the action and it isn't in your example.
And objective case "rules" as object here).  But I personally find
"incorrect" to be too loaded a word to refer to the common usage you
cited.
