Yes, that helps a lot.  It is quite difficult to find a proper Italian
phrase when you all have is a background in French, an Italian dictionary,
and an "Italian in 24 lessons" book.

Philip,

    My student tells me that this is correct, and that it means "to leave
yourself wide open" or "to let the devil hit you on your weak side"  or
"offer your flank to the devil."
