Off the stated subject but relevant to prosody. Back in the
grammar-translation days of
foreign languages, I gave my French II students the following sentence to
translate into French:
"Did John send Mary white roses yesterday evening?"
Nine translations earned an A+; 8, an A; 7, A-; 6, B+; 5, B; 4, B-; 3, C; 2,
D; 1, D-
It was the same example that I had used in class orally the day before. An
upside-down
bell curve was the result
