Hey guys,

I hope you are all enjoying the CSE Alumni Conference!

I thought I would let you guys know what the plan for the rest of the semester is right now. I have been working with Dr Karro, Dr Rao, and ECE grad student Steve Taylor trying to figure out a plan for the remaining workshops for the semester. As of right now, this is what we have:

4/10 - Python 1 - Kyle (me)
This will largely by scripting using the command window. This will lay the foundation for the next Python workshop in which we will cover how to write and execute an actual program.

4/17 - Emacs - Dr Karro & Dr Rao
For those who don’t know, Emacs is the GNU editor and is included in most GNU/Linux distributions. Emacs is an incredibly powerful editor that can be configured for any programming language. For those of you who are familiar with vim, Emacs is a similar concept, but you should learn Emacs because, in Dr Karro’s words, “You’re wrong.” So be sure to come to this workshop. This workshop will be necessary to do the second Python workshop. Also, for those of you who have never had Dr Karro or Dr Rao before, they are awesome. If nothing else, you should come to this workshop because those two together are absolutely hilarious. Also, you will learn a lot, which is kind of neat, too.

4/24 - Python 2 - Kyle (me)
This will most likely be focused more on writing actual, quality, maintainable Python programs. I do not have an outline for this workshop right now, but we will most likely be doing a small application.

5/1 - Bash - Steve Taylor
Bash is the default shell (command line) for every Linux distribution that I know of as well as Mac OS X. This workshop will be about scripting in Linux. Some knowledge of Linux may be useful for this workshop, but will not be necessary. Like Emacs, learning Bash is very beneficial for the rest of your time at Miami and will most likely be necessary for many of the jobs you apply for after graduation.

All workshops are on Thursdays at 8pm in BEN 002. If there is enough demand I am willing to do the Python workshops again on the following Tuesday, but please try to come to the Thursday workshop if at all possible.

I know there was talk about doing a Vim tutorial as well, but with the way Green Beer Day and Spring Break fell, it doesn’t look like it will be possible this semester (sorry, Naoki). It came down to being Vim or Emacs, and the faculty would really prefer you guys learn Emacs because this is very useful for when you take OS. Vim can be an option for next semester, however.

As always, there will be pizza at each of the Thursday night workshops. I cannot guarantee pizza at the potential Tuesday make-up workshops, however.

For this coming Python workshop, I would really appreciate it if you let me know if you can be there so that we don’t run out of pizza like the git workshop!

Also, officer elections for next year are upcoming. So start thinking about if you want to be part of the amazing, incredible, unbeatable, fantastic ACM officer team next year!

Thanks,

Kyle Rogers
