I don't have the dates, but the story of how it happened
for Methodists is fun. The problem with using grape juice
was keeping it from fermenting. Methodists, emphasizing
abstinence, had a problem. It was solved by a
Methodist dentist in New Jersey (I think), who developed a
process for pasteurizing the grape juice. His name was
Welch, and the rest is history. It's a good example of
doing well by doing good!
